Diocesan Council meeting

May 17

Trinity Church, Belleville

Nearly 200 people participated in the Ministry Fair on Saturday, May 3, at St. Paul's in Lansing. In workshops covering a range of ministries from church communication to church music and the Millennium Development Goals, lay and ordained ministers from around the Diocese of Michigan gathered to learn and share information.

The Diocesan Altar Guild held a unique workshop on wine tasting. The members of the Altar Guilds from various churches brought and described their choice wines and breads for use in celebrating the Eucharist. Bishop Gibbs participated and added comments on his favorite (Tawney Port) and some tips on preparing bread that won't easily crumble (don't over cook it).

The Diocesan Altar Guild will hold its spring meeting on Saturday, May 17, at All Saints', Detroit. Make your reservation by May 9 and/or receive further information by calling 313/341-5320.

The handouts used in the Communication workshops are available HERE. As we receive others, they will be added to this link.

Exploring Your Spiritual Journey pilot project

Whitaker School of Theology offers Exploring Your Spiritual Journey (EYSJ) through one of the congregations in the diocese, St. Andrew’s, Waterford. This is a pilot program bearing all the earmarks of Whitaker’s regular EYSJ program except that it is coordinated, facilitate  and administered by the church. It is also open only to people in the Oakland Deanery.

The sessions will be held at St. Andrew’s (5301 Hatchery Road, Waterford) or other parishes in the Oakland Deanery. The cost is only $275—a reduction from $1,400—due to a special grant from Whitaker. The program is limited to 12 participants.

Participating in any EYSJ program means one commits to attending 15 sessions and a retreat over a period of eight months. During the time set aside, there is opportunity to read, study scripture, reflect on one’s relationship with God, examine one’s gifts, and discern how one is being called to serve and love the Lord. All of this is done in a community of people walking a similar road.

The first session is scheduled for August 20 at St. Andrew’s. At this initial meeting, the participants will determine the remaining 14 or so sessions including dates, times and place.

Facilitators for this pilot EYSJ program are LouAnn Leonard,  the Rev. Bob Wollard, and the Rev. Deacon Marlyn Stroud.

An informational meeting will be held for those who have questions on May 21, from 7-8:30 p.m. Anyone planning to attend this meeting or participate in the pilot program should call St. Andrew’s at 248/673-7635.

Anyone prepared to register can contact the Whitaker School of Theology at 313/833-4412 or find additional information at www.whitakerschool.org.
